Radio Kurtodrome 11
It's not because here at Kurtodrome Productions we try to find links to as many of the 99 songs in our list that the music industry decided to take a break, oh no! That's why this eleventh installment of Radio Kurtodrome celebrates two new songs and some songs you'll find just under the 99th position of our yearly hitparade. Because there's only room for 99 songs, but more deserved to be mentioned. (Oh, a note to Reindeer Section: if it hadn't been for those obnoxious copy-protecting MSN sounds in "Cold Water", you would've made it to the list.)
THE WHITE BIRCH - Beauty King (D)
Their label (Glitterhouse) decided this Norwegian release was the label's best album of 2002. It only reached the Kurtodrome antennas early 2003, which makes it a real contender for the Democratische 99 list of this year. Because we wanted to make the first five minutes of Radio Kurtodrome in 2003 angelic: enjoy The White Birch from their album Star is just a sun.
NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS - Bring It On (D)
I don't know about you, but over here we are highly anticipating Nocturama, the 2003 release by the Bad Seeds. Especially since we were immensely disappointed by No More Shall We Part and the subsequent tour. Cave's label Mute is never enthusiastic about spreading music on the net, but the American label Anti gaves us a teaser of things to come and frankly, we still don't know what to think...
MICHAEL J SHEEHY - Donkey Ride (Straight To Hell)
Not downloadable, but fully enjoyable is this single by Michael J. Sheehy. Distributed by Beggars, which is where we found the link. Remind yourself to have a listen to Sheehy's third solo album, No Longer My Concern.
KRANG - Huttenkloas (D)
2002 was a weird year for Holland. The charismatic ultraright-wing politician Pim F. made the country realise it wasn't as liberal and permissive as it thought it was. Things didn't get any better when Pim F. was shot in cold blood. Dutch band Krang draws parallels to Huttenkloas, a killer who terrorized the Dutch region of Hengevelde around 1700. Gluut, the title of this album, means "sound" (or 'geluid') in Krang's dialect. I might have had doubts about Krang before, but this was excellent and well worth its 114th place in 2002's Democratische 99.
ALEXIS O'HARA - Escape Hatch (D)
As David Byrne sang in "One in a lifetime": "How did I get here?" No idea how I ended up at the Grenadine Records site, but it was there I discovered Alexis O'Hara. Her biography reveals absolutely nothing ("Alexis does lots of things."), but her label calls her music "hyper modern art pop" (not that that reveals anything). So all we can say is: a) her album is called In Abulia and b) "Escape Hatch" made it to n120 in our list.
BUFFALO DAUGHTER - Five Minutes (D)
Emperor Norton is a label that rarely disappoints us and Buffalo Daughter's latest album is another thumbs-up. Buffalo Daughter were the unluckiest of the bunch as they made it to number 100 of our list. But they get their sweet and well-deserved vengeance here.
MOXIE - ICU [MP3 OFFLINE]
Moxie is a one of those bands where the enthusiasm makes up for a lot of their shortcomings: yes, the vocals could be better and you hear they're francophones etc., but look me straight in the eye and tell me you're not charmed by Moxie. Moxie finally released an album in 2002 (Broken Fantasy, out on 62 TV Records) and we awarded them with n124 in the Democratische 99. "I see you as a woo-woo"??
