| Jehosophat thought that the use of the terminology of redskin when used in the professional football team name of Washington Redskins should be considered an honor to our American Indian brothers. Ahab was also present and stated that he felt that such terminology should not be considered an insult. On a different occasion about a week later, I took some time to evaluate the position that Jehosophat took on the issue concerning the use of the term redskin. In this discourse, I learned that such terms have curses upon them that the white man has put upon them. I can see this point and will agree to it, but the fact remains that some individuals are not quite ready to accept this spiritual fact. I know that we have the power to break curses in Jesus name, but that is hardly the issue here. The fact is that by using such terminology the said individual is still choosing to use malicious, hurtful, and abusive language. Philippians 2:3 states, Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourself. When we use such language are we really placing ourselves at the bottom of the ladder? I do not think so. In fact, I think that we are continuing to hang on to our old self and not wanting to give up our old language to replace it with one that is more suitable for a Christian to have. Colossians 4:5-6 states, Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. From this scripture we can see that using such terminology is not a recommended action to take. We should be sensitive to the cares and concerns of others, if we told an unbeliever that they are a sinner and are going to hell is that really the right approach to take without first telling them that there is a Savior? |
