| REFLECTIONS ON STANDARD VI |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Standard VI is probably the most important of the eight standards. It is within this standard that the technology facilitator is held accountable for such things as social, ethical, legal, and human issues that go along with having technology in a school environment. First and foremost it is important that the whole school community fully understand what the provided technologies can and cannot be used for. These guidelines must be adhered to by all school stakeholders, and it is the technology facilitators job to make sure that these terms are clearly outlined. This standard also addresses the needs of students who come from different cultures, speak different languages and have specific disabilities. It is important to remember that these students have the same rights as all the other students. If anything, technology is an excellent way to make this portion of the student population feel they can contribute. There are many different programs and websites that can address the needs of the various student populations within any given building. Technology can help to foster a connection with these students. With more and more children using the internet for email, chat rooms, web designing, blogging, and other academic activities, it is important that Acceptable Use Policies (AUP) are maintained as there have been a series of reports on the news of late about students using the internet to threat, humiliate, and demoralize classmates. It is essential that all administrators, teachers, students, and parents are aware of what the school's policy is and what penalties one can face for not following the policy. One of the artifacts I have selected for this standard is my evaluation of my school districts AUP. It is important that a technology facilitator is aware of what is written in the AUP and if it sufficiently offers satisfactory protection for students, parents, teachers, administrators and school district. By evaluating your AUP, you can make sure that your AUP is upgraded to reflect all important components and law changes. |

| Artifact One for Standard VI: Review of Acceptable Use Policy This articfact was selected to represent TF - VI.A.1 & 2. In my course entitled, Using the Internet in Education, I was asked to look at my school districts Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and critique it using a Rubric designed by the professor and class. After discussing the various information that would be appropriate for an AUP, we then used our Rubric to determine how our districts AUP measures up to the standards that we felt should be included. This artifact fits this standard because it shows that I was able to take an AUP and determine what characteristics it should have in order to protect the rights of the school district and the safety of all students. Artifact Two for Standard VI: Multi-Cultural Celebration This artifact was selected as it exhibits my students utilizing technology in order to create various projects for our 6th grade Multi-Cultural Celebration. Each 6th grade class was assigned a different country that they were responsible for transforming their classroom into. My class was transformed into Ireland. Students used various authoring tools as they created presentations that included cultural menus, flags, music, points of interest, passports, and posters. This activity allowed students to utilize technology to gain an understanding of the diverse cultures of the world. As a culminating activity, I took photographs that I had taken throughout the duration of the project and put them into a slide show. The presentation showed my students utilizing technology as they created their projects and the actual Multi-Cultural celebration, set to music by an Irish recording artist (The Cranberries). |
