| In this article, Wang discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using technology in second language education. Although arguments can be made about the effectiveness of technology with ESL students, Wangs research proves that using technology in the ESL classroom has a positive influence on student learning when used appropriately. Some of the advantages that Wang discusses are that technology is an extension of current teaching practices (writing essays and reading articles shifting to writing emails and conducting online research), technology provides a student centered learning environment, up to date information, and allows students to work collaboratively world wide (Wang 2005). Some of the negatives that Wang discusses are some of the objectionable material on the web, start up costs, and effectiveness in logographic languages. Although Wang found much research supporting the use of technology in ESL, he made sure to speak of some of the negative implications that he had discovered. This feature is essential in showing the reader that not everything is perfect and sometimes even things that work well has its glitches. Wang could have improved her article had she shown the statistical data collected in the case studies. This would further support her claim that technology in ESL education is beneficial. In dealing with many ESL students, I have found technology to play an integral part in helping my students acquire different language skills. Technology is also a way that these students can extend their educational experience at home. By signing onto the Internet at home, students have the ability to use web pages, email, and chat rooms to submerge themselves into language. Wang, L (2005). The advantages of using technology in second language education. T H E Journal, 32, 10. |
