Audio Projects

Here are some audio related projects I'm working on. (Last update : 17 May 2002)

Amplifier Section

BM Audio Power Amplifier

This is a pretty good sounding amplifier despite the poor workmanship. It outputs 60wpc and can be biased to preference.

Bride of Zen Preamplifier
This preamp is surprisingly good and transparent, much like a tube preamp actually. The sound takes a little getting used to, but some like the character that it presents...

Pass A40 Power Amplifier

The easiest to construct but most importantly best sounding amplifier so far. Output is a measly 40wpc but full class A...

Pass A75 Power Amplifier

This amplifier is far more involved than the other projects here. It is a good exercise in the more advanced concepts of analog circuit design, not to mention expensive too...

Pass Balanced Zen Line Stage

Claims to sound better than the BOZ preamp, but actually a lame excuse to convert my system to full balanced path...

Pass Aleph 2 Power Amplifier

Power supply and heatsinking are massive by most amplifier standards. Single-ended design, this is one mean electricity waster and heat generator!

Tripath Class-T switching amplifier

A very powerful cool-running amplifier. As noted by other amateurs, this amplifier is noticibly thinner in the midrange than the Passlab designs, but bass quality is excellent.

Harris CoolAudio© Class-D switching amplifier
This is an experimental Class-D amplifier, meant for a subwoofer. Utilizing the Harris HIP4080 MOSFET driver, it can put out 100watts into an 8ohm load.
Mark Levinson No.38 Preamplifier
Still in it's infancy stage, nothing much done in terms of tweaking. This project focuses more on interfacing design.
LM3875 mini-amp a.k.a Gainclone
An easy to construct & ultra-portable amp that is best suited for testing purposes. Read to find out more.
Phillips UCD 100w power amplifier
This is another venture into the realm of new age amplification, class D in this case. Though the amplifier itself is small in size, the power supplies for it must not be mistakenly compromised.

Loudspeaker Section

The Great Altec Mod (Work in Progress!!)

My first dab at speaker design. This is actually a mod of the Altec Lansing ACS45.1 speakers. This project is broken up into different sections due to its complexity and different disciplines required.

Impedance Characterization

This is a different aspect to me as it does not really involve electronics, but nevertheless fun to learn and do. I used Audua's Speaker Workshop software mostly because it's free and shows pretty good results, though the learning curve is steep.

Frequency Response Measurements

Simulations cannot tell the whole story how a speaker will sound. Better to trust measurements when our ears can't do the job!

Related Electronics

The goal is to make a fully integrated electromechanical system that involves active electronic compensation to push the limit of this budget speaker.

Controls and Room Correction

What would a state-of-the-art budget speaker be without some niceties and sophisticated room correction?

Miscellaneous Section

TDA1543 battery-powered DAC

The blank pcb was lying around collecting dust, so when a friend offered to lend me some of the hard-to-find chips, I chanced upon it.
