Why Japan | Sophia University | Fiance Your Trip to Japan | Culture Shock! | Learn Japanese |

9-17-02
I woke at 3am and decided to attempt to read Nana. Oddly enough I did understand more than I thought I would, but I just trying to pratice reading the syllables. I figured if I watch TV everyday that I will pick up the sound better. If I read everyday, I will understand more kanji and read faster. And if I have someone to talk to everyday in Japanese everyday, I will speak it better. So I played more breathe of fire 2 until breakfast. One of the girls and I were talking about Nana and she said that she had another manga by that author that was really good. Today was orientation at Ichigaya campus. Minori showed us a different way to go that is much faster. Once there some broad tall girl was very pushy to get her id card. It pissed me off because she said "sumimasen" and trust me i do not look Japanese at all. Today we paid for insurance, and sat through a boring orientation. Their were about 119 students and a lot of them were either japanese-americans, koreans, and a lot of americans. We got the schedule for classes and all of the information that we need for opening a bank account and if we are leaving the country during Christmas break. I discovered that I can get a part time job, but i have to apply to the immgration office, etc. all of the information is in on the handbooks. After the orientation we were set up with a Japanese buddy. If we have any questions we direct them to her. She was rather nice but the other girl in the group from seattle was kinda of a bitch. She was very cold, and prissy, as were a lot of the Americans. I was rather disappointed. Their were a few people from France and a few ppl who spoke spainish. Our guide took us to Yatsuya campus. She was really nice and I actually got to put my japanese to some use. I found out that a lot of Japanese like rap music. She was talking about Usher, which I thought was interesting. We saw a little bit of Yatsuya, like where on can look for a part time job. Also I saw the library and the many computer rooms. Apparently they have machines that you swipe your ID card and you can buy your transcript as well a certificate if you get kicked out. One of the Japanese guys who was in charge of the other group was trying to hard to act American. He was talking about how easy it is to cheat, and he kept saying shit. Our guide kept telling him in Japanese to stop. He was rather annoying and every place we went to he kept pointing out how they did not help him. Finally we were at the party where a few people introduced themselves and they gave a toast. Unfortunately, all of the "real" food had meat in it. So i ended up eating these small cakes, and some fruit. I was starving. The Japanese guy would not leave me alone.... He looked in my dictionary to show me the bad words.... He had to be mentally 5 years old. He was going to Shinjuku with a bunch of people and invited me. I didn't want to go, and lucky me I had to be back at the dorm for dinner. When we were leaving the place, some American guy asked all of us girls if we wanted to get Yakatori. I could not help but think "Asian Festish." I had to laugh to myself because the guy was completely obvious. We got back to the dorm all right, and tomorrow is the placement test, yeah. Today was rather tiring....
