The basic story of the series:

Inuyasha is a story set in the feudal age of Japan, where demons and humans are constantly fighting each other. The story begins when Kagome, an ordinary 15 year old girl in modern Japan falls down the well in her family's shrine and is transported back to the feudal age with the power of the Shikon Jewel, or Jewel of Four Souls, hidden in her body. All demons, and even evil humans desire the Jewel to make themselves more powerful. Kagome is stunned to find herself in a village out of her history textbook, and Kaede, the village elder, meets her and says she looks just like her dead sister, the priestess Kikyo. Almost immediately the village is attacked by a demon centipede, who can sense the Shikon Jewel in Kagome's posession.

In order to save the village Kagome runs into the forest where Inuyasha has been trapped to a tree for 50 years by Kikyo's arrow, unable to speak or move. Kagome sees the tree with, she thinks, a boy stuck to it. Then seeing the boy has ears, she walks up to him and feels his ears, which causes Inuyasha to wake up, and he immediately thinks she's Kikyo by the smell of her blood. They start arguing about it but the demon appears and begins attacking Kagome.

As Kagome is barely dodging the demon's attacks, Inuyasha tells her to pull out the arrow that is sealing him to the tree if she wants to live. Kagome does, and Inuyasha easily destroys the demon with his claws. That done, he turns on Kagome and tells her to hand over the Shikon Jewel unless she wants to die. Kaede, who has arrived on the scene, throws a necklace around Inuyasha's head and tells Kagome to subdue him. Kagome is confused but as Inuyasha lunges at her she yells out the first word that comes to mind, which just happens to be osuwari, or sit.

The necklace around Inuyasha's neck glows and Inuyasha immediately drops to the ground. He frantically tries to pull of the necklace but Kaede tells him that it can only be taken off by the person who put it on, at which Inuyasha proceeds to curse and sulk.

Later that night they have a long conversation where they work out that Kagome is the priestess Kikyo's reincarnation, which would explain how she had the power to pull out the arrow binding Inuyasha to the tree, how she came to have the Shikon Jewel in her body, and explains the physical resemblance to Kikyo. Kaede then says that both she and Inuyasha must guard the Jewel until someone comes along who has the power to purify it. They're both not enthusiastic about this, and after everyone goes to bed Kagome sneaks off back to the well to try to get home.

When she reaches the well she is captured by bandits who know she has the Shikon Jewel, and they take her to their leader. He takes the Jewel from her and is about to kill her when Inuyasha appears. He begins yelling at Kagome for wandering off with the Jewel, and then kills the leader, who turns out to be a crow demon in disguise. The demon grabs the Jewel and flies off with it. Inuyasha takes Kagome on his back and they hurry off after the demon, who has by now swallowed the Jewel and is beginning to transform.

They catch up to the demon and Inuyasha slices off the bottom of the crow's body, but because of the Jewel his body regenerates. Kagome knows they have to get the Jewel before the crow digests it, and she sees one of the crow's talons. She grabs it and attaches it to an arrow - Kaede gave her a bow and arrow because Kikyo would shoot sacred arrows - and shoots it at the demon.

The arrow hits the mark and destroys the demon, but in the process it shatters the Shikon Jewel inside the demon's body, and the shards scatter all over for miles. Next to the remains of the demon's body Kagome and Inuyasha find one small shard. Kaede, who has seen all of this, comes over and says that they now must travel around and collect all of the shards before they fall into evil hands, and so the journey begins. Along the way they meet new friends like Shippo, Miroku and Sango, as well as deadly enemies, and discover the truth about the past. Kagome meanwhile must also deal with maintaining her life in modern day Japan, dealing with Kikyo when she is resurrected, and, at the beginning, figuring out how to get along with Inuyasha. Basically it's an ongoing exciting, romantic and funny story that gets better as it goes and always keeps you entertained. If you want to learn more, check out the character pages.
