Naraku was originally a human bandit named Onigumo who became paralyzed and was treated by Kikyo, whom he later fell in love with. He wanted the Shikon Jewel that was in Kikyo's posession so he offered his body to demons and then absorbed their power and became the half-demon Naraku. Then he tricked Inuyasha and Kikyo into thinking that they had been betrayed by each other because he wanted Kikyo to hate Inuyasha so much that the Jewel in her posession would become defiled and more powerful. His plan failed however because Kikyo sealed Inuyasha to the tree and had herself burned with the Shikon Jewel so it would stay pure. After that Naraku waited for 50 years performing various evil acts, like placing the Kazaana in Miroku's grandfather's hand, and when the Shikon Jewel re-emerged and was broken he began collecting the shards so he could eventually have the full Jewel which would enable him to become a full-fledged demon.
