SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR !
The 90's was also a decade of 'almosts'. Beauties who did not place but scored high; and yet not high enough to merit them a place in the revered top ten semi-finalists!

Never the less, these women are stunning in their own right and a few of them managed to bring home some minor awards. Well, any minor award
is still a lot better than coming home empty handed. Here they are. . .

.........THE SMILING QUEENS
.............OF THE LATE 90'S

Queens in every sense of the word. Though they lost, they lost happy. Good sports in a competition that is not for the weak nor the faint hearted!

Aileen Damiles
Miss Philippines Universe 1996
Miss Photogenic Award
Miss Universe 1996
Be-dimpled beauty Aileen Damiles was
voted by the public via the internet as Miss Photogenic in the1996 Miss Universe Pa- geant.  Pretty and  charming, the Filipina placed 18th in the semi-finals, not enough to merit her a place in the 10 semi-finalists.
Had she probably been sent to Venezuela
for  training, she  might have fared better! After all, she has all the qualities that com-
prise a potential winner: beauty, poise, charm and presence. Insiders say that she
didn't fare well during  the preliminary in-
terviews, a  mistake that  could have cost her valuable points. Oh well, beauty with
moderate interview skills is not gonna get
you  through  the stiff  competition of the
90's! Remember, honey, you gotta be able to talk!!!

Abby also won the Miss Photo-genic Award in the 1997 Miss
Universe Pageant in Miami Beach, Florida. This together with her pre-finals night perfor- mance still wasn't good enough
to have merited her a place in the 'magic ten.'  Placing 11th overall, she was just a few points away from the 10th pla- cer, India's Nafisa Joseph. Abby may have lost points due
to her bad choice of evening gown, which as many observed, made her look short and overweight which are of course, the exact opposite of this statuesque, mestiza model turned  beauty queen!
A SMILE ON YOUR HEART FOR ONE WHO CARES. . .
Jewel was not the original Miss Philippines bet for Miss Universe. The real winner, Tisha Silang, re-
signed  due to citizenship issues. Jewel eventually
placed  16th overall in the semi-finals, but again, not  good enough  though to land a  place in the finals night. Sources say Jewel's waterloo the night of the presentation show was her evening gown. Haven't  our contestants  learned  their
lesson yet? Anyway, being 16th among 81 de- legates is quite an accomplishment already on her part; considering she was a hastily prepared re- placement! Gotta give that to her!
JEWEL
Jewel is pretty in her own right. Fair  skinned  with cute dimples, it is a shame she  never got  far during the competition. Tall and well  poised, if  only she had been given the proper training  and enough time to  prepare, she  could have placed higher than she  actually did!  Well, there are always lessons to be learned.
