CD Release Planned for Graven Images 10th Anniversary

Graven Images is HBI's first collection of original songs. It was recorded in two phases throughout 1991, however the writing of these songs began much earlier. The earliest songs written by HBI, including--"HBI", "Stay With Me", "Truth (Part I)", and "Killing Frost", were all written in 1987. After writing "On Island" in early 1991, HBI decided to take these five songs into Hyland Studios in Albany, NY (with guest drummer Ben Stone). HBI emerged with a five song EP cassette.

By the end of 1991, HBI had managed to write and record seven more songs that were combined with the five songs from the first EP to form the Graven Images album.

In late 2000, HBI began the process of remixing the original tracks and transferring them into digital format. A CD release of the album is expected to be available for the first time in 2001!

  1. Stay With Me--First HBI song ever written. Simple, straight-forward alternative pop rock song. From the 'Hyland' Sessions (see History page for more details). Hear It!
  2. HBI--Instrumental. Second HBI song ever written. From the 'Hyland' Sessions. Hear It!
  3. On Island--HBIs first foray into the 'dark'. "And I'm standing on a beach, watching the sands flow away..." From the 'Hyland' Sessions. Hear It!
  4. The Distance Between Us--Oh, the pain of unrequited love. "Trying to get a signal through, trying to let you know...Can you feel how much you mean to me, my love--does it show?" This one rocks. Hear It!
  5. Prelude--Guitar solo. More of an excuse for John to play with his new effects pedals. Hear It!
  6. Truth: Part I--Alt rock song. "Come away, calls the voice..." From the 'Hyland' Sessions. Hear It!
  7. Trisha--Rock song. First in the "crush-at-first-sight" series (see also, "Maribeth" from Itch). Hear It!
  8. Killing Frost--Reminds me of the college music from the 80s (JH). From the 'Hyland' Sessions. Hear It!
  9. Pain--Mark and I laughed our asses off for a good half-hour after recording this one. Funny though, some people didn't get the joke. This is as dark as it gets! Re-recorded for CD release of Graven Images. Hear It!
  10. Choice--Another strightforward rock song. "Why won't you let me decide, why won't you hear my voice?" Hear It!
  11. Cliché--Another joke gone awry. Regarded by many as HBI's best ever song. "With all of my heart I'll hope and pray that you don't see my love as just another cliché." See? It was just a...oh, never mind. Hear It!
  12. Frontier Dreams--The first time John got to overdub a guitar solo (thanks to the four-track). Hear It!
Note: The song "Winter Walk With You", which appeared on the 1992 cassette release of Graven Images will not be included on the 2001 CD re-release. Also, the original version of "Pain" as released in 1992 will not be included, as it will be replaced in 2001 with a completely new remake.
