In the summer of 1991, John was living in Queens, NY. HBI
has already completed half an album's worth of songs, and
the momentum was still rolling. However, a new logistical
problem presented itself--HBI had no means of recording
any more songs. Neither Mark nor John could afford studio
time, and Mike Alberts, who had helped HBI to record
'Distance' and 'Pain', was now hundreds of miles away.
Also, there was another small matter of not having a
drummer for the band.
Faced with this dilemma, John decided to get better acquainted with his charge card and paid a visit to Sam Ash Music on Queens Boulevard. Before long, John came home with a new Roland drum machine. One problem resolved. Next trip to Sam Ash yielded a Tascam 4-track recorder. Done. With new toys in hand, John started experimenting with the fine art of home studio recording. He took a riff he had been working on and made a full song out of it, complete with a drum track and a guitar solo overdub (the first of many!). The song was 'Frontier Dreams', the first HBI song to be completely recorded and engineered only by HBI. Ten years later, HBI used the same 4-track recorder and Roland drum machine for the "Red December" album. The drum machine is now referred to as the honorary third member of HBI, and has earned a nickname-- "Lljjohmbe" (don't ask...there is a story behind it, but it is way long and only funny to Mark and John) |
the walls of my room close in the City noise fills the air I need to get out of here to escape to somewhere. I think of you and where you've gone I'm filled with admiration for you whose only limits are set by your imagination
and I wish I could be with you
I will follow you to the Frontier
The voyage will be difficult
That will not shake my resolve
I will be with you at the Frontier
