Killing Frost

Hear It!

(865k)

Of all the songs written by HBI, 'Killing Frost' has undergone the most change from its original to current form. The first HBI song written with lyrics, 'Killing Frost' started out with a slow, mellow, almost ballad-like feel. A live recording of the song made in 1988 clocked in at over six minutes. John and Mark later agreed that listening to it was an "excruciating experience" (and that is a direct quote!--PS: Webster uses the words 'painful' & 'torture' in their definition of 'excruciating').

In 1991, as John and Mark were preparing for the Hyland studio session, they debated whether there was a way to salvage the song. The proposed solution was quite simple--turn up the distortion and play it twice as fast!

It worked. The Hyland recording was a much more enjoyable and listenable song, now clocking in at about three and a half minutes. However, it did feature John's worst guitar solo ever recorded! Well, John lived with the embarassment until 2001. But, while preparing for the CD release of "Graven Images", John used modern technology to digitally and seemlessly remove the solo from the song. The latest version now runs about 20 seconds shorter and sound even better!

stone buildings and gray skies
stone hearts and gray eyes
cold wind blow through my hair
yet are warmer than the ice cold stares...
they give you
the coldness penetrates my soul
in this crowd I know I'm yet alone
and I come to the realization
that I'm out here on my own
again...

the ice consumes
the cold devours
it destroys and kills
what could have been ours

hearts of stone & souls of ice
can catch you in their hold
if you submit to those drives
that will freeze your soul
forever...
break though the ice
smash the frozen stone
chip away the wall and
open your frozen soul
