Usually, if there is an interesting story behind why a song was written, we
would put the details here. However, since the lyrics of this song tell the story
pretty much exactly the way it really happened, there isn't much more to tell!
(Okay, I think she was actually dancing on the bar, not a table...but "bar" didn't
fit the rhythm of the song...) This event--the "Trisha Experience" as it were--occured at a small underground bar in Queens, NY while Mark was visiting John for the weekend. Almost immediately after, Mark wrote the lyrics for this song and sent them to John. Maybe a month later, John returned to the bar and saw Trisha again. He reminded her of the guy who tipped her dancing and bought her the flower. She did remember the event (or so she said...). John told her that Mark had written a song about her, and she seemed flattered, though also a little bit concerned for her safety... Some months later, after the recording of the "Graven Images" tape, John returned to this bar (can't remember the name...) to find Trisha at Mark's request. We thought she should have a copy of the song. Unfortunately, she was not to be seen again. The original recording of Trisha was done before John and Mark fully understood the nature of 4-track recording and sound quality. As a result, the guitar sound was far too distorted and harsh to make the song enjoyable (or even listenable). When HBI decided to convert the original source tapes for "Graven Images" to digital and release a CD, they mutually agreed that the guitar track for 'Trisha' needed to be re-recorded. This was done in May 2001, and the new guitar track appears on the CD release of "Graven Images." |
From the moment I saw you I was in trouble I couldn't take my eyes off of you You were dancing there Right on the table Somehow I had to meet you
So I did the only thing
...sometimes it seems so improbable
Trisha-To you I'm just a stranger
the vision of you dancing
Though I'm far away now
