Itch! CD Released October 1998
Itch!, the follow up to HBI's first album, Graven Images, was recorded in 1992
and released in early 1993. Still feeling a surge of creativity after the completion of
Graven Images, HBI wrote and recorded "A Call to Action" and "Smash" in early 1992. The
remaining songs were written during the year and recorded in a one-week session in December 1992.
Several songs on the album, including Far, Truth: Part II, and The River, were actually written
just moments before their recording.
In 1998, John transferred the original source tracks from the album into digital format
to create the first ever HBI compact disc. All new cover artwork was also created (see above).
- How 'Bout It--An up-tempo pop song about the lure of love. "Come with me, we'll leave today...
How 'bout it?"
- Itch--Frenetic instrumental
- Maribeth--HBI's second in a series of songs featuring the "crush-at-first-sight" theme
(hear "Trisha" from Graven Images). A barre-chord rocker. "Maribeth, I'll wait for you,
it may be forever..."
- Starlight--Mellow, atmospheric piece. Moral: Acknowledge the beauty of the time you
have together. "For tonight, at least, the universe is ours..."
- Far--Alt rocker. Beauty turns to sadness in times of separation. "This room is full
of the absence of you..."
- Truth: Part II--My favorite instrumental (JH).
- A Call to Action--The title says it all. Dark music featuring violin accompaniment
by Mary Malefyt and drum fills by Scott Wachtel.
- Smash--Our humorous attempt at thrash-metal. John exposes his musical roots.
- Falling/Sinking--Two great songs that work great together. Again, going with the dark
alternative musical style, but always with a glimmer of hope. "I am falling...in love with you."
- The Winter--Another alt rock song. "...and when you feel that life's against you, I will be
there for you."
- The River--The ballad. Still one of our favorite songs. Describes, once again, the pain and
longing of separation. "As long as this river flows, I'll love you..."
