HBI

Hear It!

(484k)

This is one of the first songs written by HBI, and is considered somewhat of a partner song to "Stay With Me" since they were both written and originally recorded at the same time (see the "Stay With Me" page for more information.

Originally, there was no official title for this song. We think the working title was "What!?!", or something like that. It was later that Mark and John both joined a dorm-based softball team, the 'Genny Screamers.' When the team had official jerseys made for the league games, the letters "H B I" were proudly displayed across our chests. (Confused? That's okay-- its one of those things that is best kept a mystery). Mark and John eventually borrowed the letters from the softball team for the official name of their instrumental. For the following softball season, the 'Genny Screamers' officially changed the team name to 'HBI'.

Come to think of it, it wasn't until 1991 (during the Hyland Studios session) that Mark and John agreed to name the band HBI. Until then, there were a variety of working names, like 'Anthem' and 'Red December'.

So the order goes like this:

  1. HBI letters appear on softball jerseys
  2. Red December (the band) names instrumental "HBI"
  3. Softball team changes name to HBI
  4. Red December (the band) changes name to HBI
  5. HBI (the band) names John's basement Red December Studios for the recording of the "Graven Images" album
  6. HBI (the band) names third album "Red December"
(Still confused?--that's okay, so are we...)
