Truth: Part I

Hear It!

(1.014M)

When HBI was still struggling to choose a band name (and settling for Red December since no one had any better ideas), we had two original songs written with lyrics, "Truth" and "Killing Frost". These, along with the instrumental "HBI" completed our three-song repertoire. ("Stay With Me" did not have lyrics yet, so we didn't bother with that one.)

Since Rush was a huge influence on all band members (including--at that time-- Kevin Armant on drums and Rich Single on keyboards) we decided to write an epic song in three parts. "Truth" was the result. The three parts were titled; 'The Calling,' The Journey,' and 'The Revelation.' HBI made a live recording of the full song (clocking in at over nine minutes) in 1988.

When Mark and John revived HBI as a duo in 1991, they decided to radically overhaul these early originals for the Hyland session (this overhaul is much more apparent in the Hyland version of "Killing Frost"--see that page for more details). The revised version of the song featured only the first third of the original-- the part titled "The Calling", and was included on Graven Images as "Truth: Part I".

The lyrical inspiration for this song came to Mark from a class he and John took together (in fact, the only class they took together during four years of school), Philosophy 214--World Religions. This probably came about the time we were reading "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse.

he sits in his gray room
on his gray chair
looking through his gray window
with a gray stare

a voice is calling him
from a faraway place
thundering in his head
reaching out across time and space

come away calls the voice
to find your resolution
come seek the answers
find your solution

...he's heard the calling

surely a man wants to know
the secrets of love and life
but will finding all the answers
resolve internal strife?
the risk is outweighed
the temptation's too great
he too long has strayed
and sets out to meet fate

knowing what he must do
knowing not what the future may hold
knowing that he may never return
he makes up his mind as
he stares down the open road...
