Yellowstone Journal

Hi. I’m Ben Benton from Flagstaff, Arizona. I believe that you will enjoy my daily journal from Yellowstone National Park during the summer of 1999. I left downtown Flagstaff with my saddle and duffel in early July and lighted in the horse corral at Mammoth Hot Springs. My journal will continue through September 20th, unless the weather shuts us down earlier. You’ll read about adventures on the back country trails, Yellowstone history, people I meet, and anything else I can think of to write about.

I’m the author of “National Park Employment Data,” a guide to working in national parks, which is available for purchase on my web site at www.gorp.com/nped/. I’ve been working in national parks and ski areas off and on for over twenty years.

Because I want the data in my book to always be fresh, I continually test the concepts, employers, and tips that I provide. Right now, I’m working for Amfac Parks and Resorts. They are a top notch concession company because they place employee training, morale, and amenities first.

Sunday, 8-22-99

I had today off. Since its my first Sunday off since I got here, I attended the interdenominational Christian Ministry In Yellowstone National Park service at 8:30 at the stone chapel in Mammoth Hot Springs.

Services in the summer run from June 6 to August 22nd, so I attended the last one. Students conduct the worship and they’re mostly all leaving now to return to school.

“A Christian Ministry in the National Parks” had its beginnings in Yellowstone years ago and now is in 65 national parks with over 300 seminary and college students involved. Forty denominations recognize and support the ministry.

In Yellowstone there are services at Bridge Bay Campground, Canyon Village Campground, Fishing Bridge, Grant Village, Lake Hotel, Lake Lodge, Madison Campground, Mammoth Chapel and Campground, Norris Campground, Old Faithful Inn, Old Faithful Lodge, and Tower Falls Campground. With two morning worships and one evening service at most locations, there are thirty-two services every Sunday.

The NPS and concession companies endorse and cooperate with the CMNP by hiring the participating students, but no NPS or concession company funds are used. The services, activities, and fellowship are made possible by donations.

If you would like to support A Christian Ministry in Yellowstone, send your contributions to A Christian Ministry in Yellowstone, P.O. Box 478, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190. If you would like to support A Christian Ministry in the National Parks (to help all 65 ministries), send your contribution to A Christian Ministry in the National Parks, 45 School Street, Boston, MA 02108.
