Hi. Im Ben Benton from Flagstaff, Arizona. I believe that you will enjoy my daily journal from Yellowstone National Park during the summer of 1999. I left downtown Flagstaff with my saddle and duffel in early July and lighted in the horse corral at Mammoth Hot Springs. My journal will continue through September 20th, unless the weather shuts us down earlier. Youll read about adventures on the back country trails, Yellowstone history, people I meet, and anything else I can think of to write about. Im the author of National Park Employment Data, a guide to working in national parks, which is available for purchase on my web site at www.gorp.com/nped/. Ive been working in national parks and ski areas off and on for over twenty years. Because I want the data in my book to always be fresh, I continually test the concepts, employers, and tips that I provide. Right now, Im working for Amfac Parks and Resorts. They are a top notch concession company because they place employee training, morale, and amenities first. |

Friday, 8-20-99Today there were just two wranglers, J.C. and I, along with the assistant head wrangler, so J.C. and I led all five trail rides today. I love to ride more than anything else so it was a perfect day. The fifth ride started at 4:30 P.M. and the sky was clabbering up. I decided to get my chaps and rain jacket just in case. Good decision. Past the halfway point the wind picked up, lightening flashed, and a steady driving rain started. I stayed plum dry but J.C. got soaked. We got the dudes back safe and sound and they all had a great time in spite of the weather. ***** Roommate John and I have been listening to some old cassette tapes I brought from Arizona. I got Tumbling Tumbleweeds back in the early 80s from Readers Digest. Its a three-tape set with 100 old Western songs by the Sons of the Pioneers, Hank Snow, Gene Autry, Bob Wills, Rex Allen, etc. Right now were playing Along the Santa Fe Trail, Twilight
on the Trail, Empty Saddles, Carry Me Back to the Lone Prairie,
Theres a Gold Mine in the Sky, Bury Me Not on the Lone
Prairie, and The Shifting Whispering Sands. The tape is in my
Sony Walkman which is connected to my Bose Wave Radio. Its
some of the sweetest music this side of heaven. |
