Not all enemy units are necessarily visible on a tactical map.
An enemy unit will be visible if the unit is
no farther than 5 squares from at least one of
your own units. As expected, some special
cases and exceptions also apply:
- If your own unit is deployed on a hill
then the sight range increases to seven
squares.
- If your own unit is in a wooded square
your sight range is decreased to one.
- If the enemy unit is in a wooded square it
will only be visible to units in adjacent
squares (see dotted line around Artillery unit
in map below).
Note: Other obstructions such as buildings,
hills, ponds and streams do NOT influence the
sight range of a unit.
A few examples (see map below):
- The CSA infantry unit,
being deployed on a hilltop, sees the
enemy infantry.
- However, it doesn't see
the enemy artillery unit in a wooded square
since units in woods
are only visible from adjacent squares
(see dotted line on map)
unless and until that unit
(in woods) fires.
- The USA infantry unit
knows nothing of enemy infantry since it is
positioned on flat ground and has a sight
range of only 5 squares.
- The artillery is also
unaware of the enemy infantry since being
located in the woods, it has a sight range of
one square.
- Would the USA infantry
advance far enough to see the CSA unit, then
both USA units could take it under fire.
