Basics - Weapons - Range and Elevation
A number of units carry firearms or artillery pieces. Each type of armament has a specific range assigned in which it can target an enemy unit. Although there are other considerations defining if a unit can be fired upon, the first and most important one is range. Below is a small chart containing all arms presently used in CWOL as well as the maximum range for that weapon..

Another point that needs to be considered when attempting to fire on an enemy unit is the terrain.

Hills
  • Units on hills can hit any target regardless of terrain. (A > B)
  • All units can target enemy units deployed on a hill regardless of terrain (B > A)

Flat Terrain: If both units are on flat ground ...

  • Units cannot fire thru buildings, woods, ponds or hills (A > C)
  • Units may fire into wooded squares but not thru these

Exceptions

  • 24-lb mortars are exempt from all terrain limitations since these munitions are "lobbed". (see "3")

Note: there are further limitations, i.e. other friendly or enemy units interposing themselves between you and your target but these will be covered separately.
