Getting Neighbourhood Children Involved.
In 2003 the Community Awareness Awards were introduced at Dyke House School. The idea is to involve children and listern to their opinions, since they are the future for Dyke House Estate. Third prize was awarded to Karen Wardell. Second prize was awarded to Lizzie Carrington.
The winner with first prize was awarded to Sophie O'Connor.
|
Sophie O'Connor explains,
"We need a safe place to live and because of all the graffiti and boarded up houses we don't feel safe at all".
Karen Wardell explains,
"I think the Dyke House area around here needs to be changed dramatically. Because the houses really do need some more cleaning up and the streets need more graffiti cleaning up. Also I think that the community thinks that we need a safe place to live were we can actually
trust people as well and have no problems around us and not worry behind our backs with everyone".

Muriel Boreland explains,
"Last year we entered a competition with the Northern Echo "Making a Difference", it was run all over the North East, and we won first prize (£500). By the contribution of the children made in the street, we promised them a party. So we got the bouncy castle and Easter eggs because we
have to repay them, because without their help we wouldn't have got here, so this is there reward".
Little, Rachel Holmes explains,
"I like living in this street because I have lots of friends and theirs nice people and nice flowers and its a nice neighbourhood.".
|
Eddie Price explains,
"Its been a great 12 months in that the residents have done so such, they have come on so far. We have networked across the country, they have contacts with Lambirth, Aberdeen and all over the country. The group have grown and as part of that growth they have also become more aware
of there enviroment and the need to do things in that enviroment with others for the benefit of everybody. ".
"Their have got the children involved for the school projects, which is great. Once again it brings in another dimension of things. It shows from the childrens prospective how they want to see their community and the amazing thing is the children share the same views as the adults.
So hopefully that wiil transfer into the future".

Eddie Price continued...
"The resource centre will change behond recognition in the next 2 to 3 months. A major centre is being built there. The first of its type for the people of Dyke House. It will have adult education, providing an IT suite, trainers delivering training that the residents are workingf for
their community. The residents are more professional now in there approach to people. They are looking to the future, they are very bright, they are thinking, they are not rushing into things, thinking about their community, their future, not for themselves.".
"They are looking at themselves now as custodians for the future, for the children into the project. I think that the future that lies ahead, the next 12 months, who knows what will happen with a group like this.
