Community Awareness Awards Scheme

Over 250 young people from Dyke House School have received awards after getting involved in a Community Awareness Awards Scheme, organised by the Community Resource Centre at Chatham Road. Participants developd projects, with photos and presentations, to show what they liked and disliked about the community under the banner of 'Where we live now and what we would like to see in our community in the future.' The winner was year 7 pupil Sophie O'Connor and the two runner-ups were Karen Wardell and Lizzie Carrington; all received trophies and certificates to celebrate their successes.

The New Chattam Road Centre
Thanks to the £280,000 investment from Sure Start a new Community Centre based at Chatham Road will form a focus foe community development in the Dyke House and Jackson area. The new centre whichy is presently being built, will provide computer facilities, a resident's room, which can be hired out, a One Stop Shop for community advice a toy library, a cafe and a garden area. The center will also house Sure Start, Comunities Acting Together (CAT) and the Community Wardens.

CAT are planning to organise vocational training courses and arts and crafts sessions to be held at the centre and are hoping that residents might volunteer their skills and knowledge (however diverse!) to in the development and teaching of sessions and courses. As Muriel Boreland of CAT explains, "a lot of people have skills that they could pass on to other residents and help build opportunities for the community."

"Oh I do like to be by the SEASIDE".

A street party has been organised by Borougham Area Resients' Association to be held in July this year. The party will have a beach theme, and everyone who attends needs to grab their sunglasses, bucketts and spades and rubber rings.

There will be music, games, prizes and food at the Rovers Quoits Club. All who live in the Dyke House and Jackson Area are invited. For more information contact: Muriel Boreland 01429 260146.
