Community Wardens.
Simular to other areas in Hartlepool the residents of Dyke House and Jackson Wards benefit from the hard work of the patroling Hartlepool Community Wardens.

A day in the life of a Community Warden. 8.50am - Arrive for work.
9.00am - Telephone admin, logging on to the GPS net work.
9.15am - Supervisor’s morning briefing, possibly delegating additional duties that require our attention.
9.45am - Move to patrol bases.
10.00am - Pre-patrol admin, where we ensure that we have everything that we need to carry out our role.
10.15am - My partner and I set off on our first patrol of the day, during which we pay one of our regular visits to one of the sheltered housing schemes.
10.15am - My partner and I set off on our first patrol of the day, during which we pay one of our regular visits to one of the sheltered housing schemes.
12.30pm - Following our patrol we return to the patrol base, once there, there are reports to be completed, environmental ones for items of rubbish that we discover dumped.
1.30pm - We break for lunch, which has no specific timing. If we happen to be dealing with an incident, then lunch will wait.

A day in the life of a Community Warden continued...

2.30pm - Back from lunch, we set off to attend one of the many resident association meetings where the residents have a chance to air any grievances or problems that they feel we can help with; if we are unable to help we may be able to point people in the right direction.
4.00pm - The meeting over, we patrol back through the estate to our base, to carry out any administrative tasks.
4.30pm - We head back to our main office, were we meet up with the rest of the team, and for the evening brief, whilst there passing on any information that may be relevant.
5.15pm - A well earned cup of tea.
5.30pm - Back to the business at hand, we are contacted by a resident who is concerned about a group of youths sitting on her garden wall drinking alcohol and being generally noisy. On arrival we approach the youths and have a chat with them, we tell them that although they are behaving themselves they are worrying some of the residents and suggest that they go and sit on a nearby field where they can chat all they want. Without any complaints the group move off. We contacted the caller and appraised her of the outcome.
7.00pm - It’s Monday night and that means bingo night at the church hall. We show a presence in the area to reassure the young and older bingo buffs as they arrive, once inside we continue our patrol around the estate, stopping to chat with various groups of youths.
8.30pm - Back to the church hall, as the bingo is over, we put I another reassurance patrol as the players leave the hall.
8.45pm - We call at the local community centre, ballroom dancing in the main hall, and the slimming club up stairs. We partake in the offer of a welcome cup of tea, which helps keep out the cold evening chill.
9.05pm - Another telephone call, this time from a worried neighbour who thinks he heard someone in the rear yard of an empty house, when we arrive we find the rear gate has been forced open. No one is around and we secure the gate as best we can, and inform the resident of what we had done and that we would report the problem to the housing office the next morning.
9.30pm - We patrol our way back to the base.
10.00pm - End of shift administration and the completion of patrol reports.
10.30pm - The end of a long shift, and it’s time to go home.

Anthony Scarre has also informed the group that there are no immediate plans for the mosque to be built on the plot of land on the corner of Turnbull Street and Brougham Terrace. He has agreed that this land should be cleaned up with white edging boulders to prevent cars driving onto the plot. Also the back wall will be decorated with a mural and perhaps painted goal posts for children to play football.

GRANTS. Perth Street has received a grant for flowers and gardening tools to improve the flower beds in the streets in the area. These are to enable the residents to maintain the flower beds. A Residents starting up grant has also been applied for and we should hear about this shortly. We are also applying for a grant for a childrens trip to the Sunderland Leisure Centre in June/July.
