Residents champion the COMMUNITY!
Muriel Boreland, Val Thompson and Tom Steward (Brougham Area Residents Association) - You may know Muriel, Val and Tom as very active members of the community. They are founders of the
Brougham Area Residents Association (BARA), which they set up to help combat the fear of crime and lack of community sprirt in the Brougham area.
Muriel, Val and Tom have noticed a big change in their community since BARA started. For example, BARA have planted flowers outside their houses and put up hanging baskets. They received
community safety funding to provide door alarms and dusk till dawn lighting for vulnerable residents. BARA have also arranged trips for the young and elderly, set up drawing classes and
organised street parties. Muriel concluded that "We have achieved a great deal and we hope it will continue for many years to come!"
|
Last year, BARA received the 'Making a Difference' trophy, sonsored by the Northern Echo and presented by David Bellamy, for breathing fresh life into Perth Street. This year BARA has received 'Awards for All'
funding, which has been used to finance bus trips for Brougham Area residents. Trips have included Lightwater Valley Theme Park and in the future, there will be atrip to The Forbidden Corner
(31st August). - if you would like to find out more about the Brougham Area Residents Association, find out who the resident association contact is in your street, or wish to book spaces
on the bus trip please contact Muriel Boreland: 01429 291537.

Community Awareness Awards Scheme. This award scheme will maximise the involvement of children through the school system,
and insure that children and education are linked into strategic partnership aims. They will be aimed at the children in the
Neighbourhood Renewals of Dyke House and Jackson wards.
Purpose. To raise the awareness of all school aged children of their communities, and to encourage them to be involved in the participation process.
This will be an annual award (for the next 2 years), thereby allowing children's observations of the changes that are taking
place, and this is to be gauged over time.
Task. It will involve a piece of written, drawn or painted work with the theme "Where we live now, and what we would like to see in the future".
Judged by. This will be judged by residents, Members of C.A.T. and a Resident Particapation Team.
Prizes. There will be prizes for the best three entries from the 3 schools involved. (1 Comprehensive and 2 Primary)
