Community Saftey.
Muriel Boreland gives attention to an empty house and explains that there is no shutters at the windows, only curtains.
Muriel says, "This is what we do we oversee the houses. Since a year ago we have also aquired security gates on the back alleys.
We have made vast improvements in the area, we want to upgrade the area and revalue the houses that the private landlords devalued.
We have done this in our street, we took our street back so can everybody else".
|
Eddie Hall (Chair Person - Residents Association) explains,
"Within a year there has been tremendous advances. One of the first things you feel is that a lot of other people are having problems, you share problems and you share solutions. Beening involved with Communities Acting Together, we have benefitted both in knowledge
and how to deal with problems in specific areas such as anti-social behaviour and anti-crime resources. Communities Acting Together means that a larger organisation will be taken a lot more notice of. Its working well" .

|
Eddie Hall continued...
"But we are limited to what we can do with the resources we have and although we have come so far its still small beer. We need a mush better setup. The problems are really an influx of private rented property who are just benefitting farming. Sometimes 50% is let to benefits,
which in itself is no bad thing, but its the absent landlords".
"We do need some kind of money and regeneration to uplift the area and give people confidence in the housing market again otherwise we are fighting a losing battle. We are fighting well upto now, but we can only do so much unless we get helped".
|
Kevin Parkes (Urban Policy Manager)
explains, "Over the past year we have been developing an action plan with some service providers in the area to try and inproveservice delivery. But one keq issue that has come out of that, which requires urgent action is the problems of the vacant housing and the poor management
by some private landlords".
"We therefore commisioned constultants to come and work with residents and with the council service providers to start putting forward a vision of the housing enviroment in the area. That vision is absolutley essential to be able to go to funders hopefully this time next year
to obtain the big resources that are needed to tackle the problems and create a new enviroment".
|
|
Kevin Parkes continued...
"Also to create a very positive future for the next 25 to 30 years in the area and hopefully bring back in new investment, new families, new households and hopefully improve everybodies quality of life".
Andy Powell (Head of housing management) explains,
"I think whats really exciting about the residents involved in Dyke House and Jackson Wards is not only that the residents really understand the problems and whats going on in the area. But through the training development
their really understand how that fits into regional and national issues which are going on that effect their community. And that places them in a better position to get involved in the regeneration process ".
