Auckland. Not the capital, but it is the entry city for a very high proportion of New Zealand's International visitors.
I arrived here on December 3rd, after having spent the vast majority of December 2nd in the air, in two gruelling eleven or so hour flights, travelling by way of Incheon International airport, Seoul, South Korea, and travelling with Korean Airways, for whom I have nothing but praise.
I arrived to find that Auckland, at this, the beginning of their summer, was cold, and VERY wet. And to make matters worse I was going down with a cold myself! However I was determined not to let this stop me and to make the best of things. My first full day therefore was spent visiting the City centre, then catching the suburban train out to Remuera, from where I walked to One Tree Hill. This place lends its name to a song on the "The Joshua Tree" by U2, and was written in memory of Maori New Zealander Greg Carroll, who worked for the band and was killed whilst riding a motorbike (reputedly Bono's) in Dublin. |
