| Rio de Janeiro; Christmas Day, 25-12-03 |
| My very first time out of the UK on Christmas day, and I was in Rio de Janeiro and planning to go to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. I had been told, and had seen from photographs, that the views of the natural harbour from the top of Pao De Acucar (Sugar Loaf Mountain) were amazing, and I wanted to go to see this for myself. The day started misty, with fairly low cloud, and I was not even sure whether the cable car would be operating on Christmas Day, so I went across the road from where I was staying and sat on Praia de Botafogo until I saw a cable car actually moving. Having satisfied myself that indeed it was operating, I set of off on foot for Estacio Do Cam Aereo, the lower terminal for the cable car to the Summit of Pao De Acucar. Half an hour later, and after a stop at the half way point, I was on the summit of Sugar Loaf, in LOW CLOUD! This had somehow swept in when I had been at the half way point at Morro Da Urca. But all the signs indicated that the cloud would clear again if I waited a while, and as I was in no hurry, I did just this, and sure enough the cloud did clear, to give views, although not as clear as I would have some days later at Corcovado, that were clear enough to see right across Baia de Guanabara (Guanabara Bay). The natural harbour at Rio de Janeiro is listed by some as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Just who took it upon themselves to decide what the seven natural wonders were to be I do not know, but whatever the reasoning behind such a list, The Bay at Rio is indeed spectular in its size and beauty, so was well worth the visit. |
