Enseada On the North Eastern tip of the island of Sao Francisco de Sul, (Ilha de Sao Francisco) is Enseada, a smallish seaside town, which faces on the North Western side towards the more sheltered Baia da Babitonga, and on the North Eastern side onto the Atlantic Ocean. It was here that we spent four days. Bearing in mind that this is the Brasilian summer, the weather was quite atrocious, with leaden skys which regularly opened up to give heavy downpours. I personally did not mind this too much, it was keeping the temperature down and I was in a new place and happy to explore, but Maud whom I was with, who had hoped to come to swim and tan herself on the beach, was decidedly moody about this! Being able to speak very little Portuguese, I decided that the best way to not get lost was to make myself my own little map of the streets around where we were staying, and in no time at all I was off around the town with no danger of getting lost! The beaches that face out onto the South Atlantic Ocean, of which one features in one of the photographs on this page, are suitable for surfing.

Above: Prainha. Apparently a very popular beach in the summer, and suitable for surfing; on this particular day it was almost deserted.
Right: This was one of the views from where we stayed at Pousada Da Ihla. (See the separate webpage concerning this pleasant hostel.) To the right of the hill in the left middle ground of the picture is a path that leads down to very small and very secluded cove, which takes the full force of the Atlantic Rollers. Alternatively it is possible to go on round onto the hill itself, from which fine views of the surrounding coastline can be seen.
