El Misti Hostel, Botafogo, Rio De Janeiro.
What a find this hostel was. As clean, and probably cleaner than the five star hotel that I also stayed in whilst in Brasil, it is just across the road from Botafago's beach. It doesn't have five star views across the bay from all, or indeed any of its windows, but if you want somewhere to stay in Rio de Janeiro in clean, inexpensive and friendly surroundings, then this is the place. It does have a few minor faults, for example the staircase (pictured), which is a beautifully crafted wooden one, is dangerously slippery, I witnessed one girl slip and fall down it in the six days that I was there, fortunately she did not seriously hurt herself; the showers did not run very hot, in fact until you knew the secret of the gas heater that powers one of them, it does not run hot at all, not too big a problem when the outside temperature is about 32 degrees Celcius, as it was when I was there.
