This fascinating Art Deco town was one of the towns devasted by an earthquake in 1931. I found it to be a most interesting place. With two nights here, staying at the YHA right on the seafront, (which proved to be for me the best of the YHA hostels in that it was not too big, nicely positioned, friendly, and very clean and well equipped) and that I had some very good weather here compared with other places. I had time to explore round the town quite thoroughly, which included walking up to the Bluff Hill lookout, giving me some fine views across Hawke bay. I also spent quite a bit of time finding out more about the earthquake and the effect that it had had to on this town.
