With this project, I was instructed to design a print advertisement for Amethyst Bay resort. From there, I was told to pick a type of promotion for the theme of the ad, so I chose to focus on dinner packages at the resort. My target audience was anyone between ages 20–60, specifically people that enjoy time in the Caribbean. While researching the Caribbean islands, I discovered the link between cruise ships, resorts, and towel origami. With this in mind, I came up with the idea to fold a napkin in the shape of a fish, and use the shape to guide the eye through the design. I then replicated the shape of the napkin and created a path for the eye using the design principles of rhythm, movement, and isolation.
This primary tool I used for this project was Adobe Photoshop, but I also took the photo of my folded napkin with my SLR camera. My first version of the design incorporated the original logo of the resort that I updated at a later date. I also scaled the logo up thanks to feedback from my professor at the time. The design uses imagery found via the Creative Commons search, and no attribution was required. All ethical, cultural, and social interpretations have been considered, and no compromises were necessary to achieve my original vision for the ad. This piece was selected for my portfolio as it displays my ability to solve a design problem in a creative way. In addition, the piece highlights my knowledge and execution of many different principles of design. Later feedback suggested scaling the logo of the resort up once again, so I made this change for the final design.
