Print Poster Design

Life of Fight

For this project, I picked a quote from designer Massimo Vignelli and created the poster using physical objects. Despite the quote originating from the world of design, I felt the meaning and interpretation of the message was open to everyone, so my target audience was anyone from teen to adult. I kept the concept universal, as nails are symbolic of passion and the passage of time. Vignelli was also fan of the Helvetica typeface, so the nails have a Helvetica backbone as well. The primary design principles used in the poster are repetition, anomaly, and contrast, with the rigid nails set against the drip of fluid.

The poster started in physical form using foamcore and nails. I then photographed and edited the rest of design in Adobe Photoshop. Thanks to feedback from my peers at the time, I increased the contrast of the nail heads to improve readability. All ethical, cultural, and social interpretations have been considered, and no compromises were necessary to achieve the final suggestive vision for the poster. I selected this piece as it displays my ability to create a dynamic visual outside of the digital environment. The last—and most recent—change to the design involved removing the hyphen in front of the quote author, as a fellow classmate found it distracting.
