The Melancon Family The Melancon's are one of my French lines. These hardy souls came to Louisiana by way of the Acadian region of Canada after being evicted from their homes in Nova Scotia by the English, who were at war with France at the time. In 1756, they began arriving in Louisiana. In 1779, during the US War for Independence (Revolutionary War), Etienne Melancon fought with General Galvez, against the British, who had control of the forts of the lower Mississippi valley. After the war, Etienne married and raised a family in St. James Parish, Louisiana, an area that came to be known as the Acadian Coast. I asked my mother what she remembered about her great grandmother, Estelle Melancon Rodriguez and this was her story: I remember her as a feisty little old lady. She was shorter than me (5'1"); she was always rushing everywhere. She was a very fast walker and very independent; that may have been the reason when she fell out of Uncle Frank's car she picked herself up and shook her fist at him. They were going around the circle at De Saix Blvd. near City park. She wouldn't get back in the car and walked about 2 miles to her destination. That was about 3 years before she died. Estelle, who had 7 daughters and 1 son, was 90 when she died in 1936.
