The Coroy's

Juan Pedro Coroy is believed to have come to Louisiana with his wife, Francoise Gonzales, from Mexico. He was working on a plantation when the Civil War reached the state. Juan (also known as John) joined the Union army and served with Captain Kendrick's Company (later called Company H), 1st Regiment, of the Louisiana Infantry, from August 8, 1862 until July 12th, 1865. In March of 1864 he was assigned to a cavalry unit and in August, 1864 he was assigned to the Provost Guard, stationed at Donaldsonville.

His son, John Peter Coroy, was born in 1864. John married Honora Rodriguez in 1889 and they had eight children. John worked all his life in the sugar cane fields in Ascension and Assumption parishes. John died in 1910 of galloping pneumonia.
