"X"
Reviewed by Heroman X Zero Protoman
Overview:
"X" is about a young boy named Kamui who needs to make the ultimate decision of
what he plans to save: the Earth and its luscious purity, or humanity and its
futuristic technology. How he chooses is not this direct, however, as there are
two parties trying to sway him over to their side: the Dragons of Heaven, who
are trying to protect humanity, and the Dragons of Earth, who are trying to
restore the Earth by destroying humanity. Kamui eventually chooses one and
follows them, but his long-time friends may be part of the plan themselves...
Storyline: 4/5
The strong storyline is what makes this movie so great. Although choppy at
times, it supplies us with everything we need to understand the plot. However,
it fails to tell us enough about the other characters' pasts and doesn't explain
enough about the Dragons of Earth. For readers of the manga, they might know a
little more about these things, but the movie itself doesn't support the
character depth too well. Aside that, it has a very strong storyline.
Plot: 5/5
Yes, this earned a perfect score. If you look at things logically, both the
Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth are heroes, but for different causes.
A very peculiar plot for animes to have. The movie, however, makes it seem as
though the Dragons of Earth are evil, as they are out to destroy humanity.
Logically, it WOULD make them the bad guys, but we can't just look at humanity
itself. That would leave out the fact that they're trying to preserve a planet.
Because of this situation, it causes the plot to be very sophisticated, but
still very good. That's why it deserves every bit of that 5/5.
Characters: 4/5
Again, a 4/5. As said before in the storyline part, this movie doesn't support
character depth real well. However, set aside that, and you have a great line
of characters. The characters still have that supernatural feel to them, but at
the same time, have that natural feel to them that makes them seem human. The
movie DOES do a REAL GOOD JOB of giving the characters a good personality, which
adds to the realistic sense of things. Still, they lack character depth, and,
in anime, lacking depth is a big no-no. It makes some viewers feel left out,
which will not get you very high ratings.
Ending: 4/5
It would've scored a perfect, if it had, in fact, left all the characters alive.
Instead, they decide to kill off everyone except Kamui. That makes for a very
traumatic ending, but still conveys the ultimate decision that Kamui made real
well. And it still has a fairly good ending, considering Kamui's the only one
living.
Overall: 5/5
Though it only scored perfect in one area, it still deserves the perfect score
overall. The reason for this is although they lacked some major things, they
still made a perfectly good movie. However, if you're someone who wants ALL the
details, you better find another movie. This one is strictly for those with a
heart for action, as there is TONS of it. The ending is great, the characters
are all great, even though they lack depth, and the plot and storylines are
really awesome. Special effects aren't the absolute greatest, but they still
rock the house. As one of my personal favorites, you can definitely tell that
the movie is awesome, but the manga has to be better. Another good reason for
the perfect score is that you don't find many movies like this out there, and
this is a refreshing get-away from most other animes. So, like it or not, I
would seriously recommend this movie to any serious anime-watcher or action
fanatic. Fans of the Shinobis and other ninja stuff should stay away, as this
has little hack-and-slash or punch-and-kick action. Strictly for the action
fans. DBZ fans might have a little fun watching this movie.
