Kenshin Himura
"Hitokiri Battousai" the man slayer. Kenshin is a wandering samurai in 1879 Japan, 10 years after the start of the Meiji Restoration. During the Meiji Revolution, Kenshin was feared above all for his swordsmanship and ruthlessness in battle. As a penance for his deeds, Kenshin turns to the life of a wandering samurai after the end of the war, determined never to kill again. As assurance of this, Kenshin carries a "Reverse Blade Sword", which is quite obviously a sword with the blade on the wrong side so that a slash with it would not be lethal. He carries an "X" shaped scare on his left cheek and is noticeable because of his long flaming red-orange hair. During his journey's, Kenshin meets Kamiya Kaoru and resides at her dojo, hoping to find peace under the new government, but as any viewer knows, Kenshin has not shortage of enemies under the Meiji's "Peace"

Kamiya Kaoru
Kaoru inherited her fathers dojo he died. She teaches her students "Kamiya Kasshin" or in English "The sword that protects" style of sword fighting. Unfortunately, her students ran away from the dojo and her family name was ruined. This is when she meets Kenshin and takes him in. She can become very hot tempered at times, especially when others jokingly make fun of her cooking or the almost empty dojo, but otherwise is caring and protective of her property and friends. She is very capable with wooden swords, the only allowed to be carried in Japan at the time, and surprisingly fends off some of the biggest and meanest looking of enemies at times. Her only active student is the stubborn Yahiko Myojin with whom many arguments and shouting matches occur though it is obvious it is similar to sibling quarrels and that they care for each other like sibling would.

Yahiko Myojin
Yahiko is the son of a once respectable samurai but taken in by Kaoru after the death of his family. He often argues and shouts at Kaoru, especially when they insist on ending his name in "Chan" because of his desire to rid himself description of a little boy. His skills as a swordsman are well past his years after learning from Kaoru and watching Kenshin in the heat of battle. He proves quite useful at climactic points in the story, but often gets himself into trouble and often has to be saved by Kenshin.

Sanosuke Sagara
Sanosuke is like a big brother to Yahiko and a good friend to Kenshin. He carries no weapon but is very dangerous when using his fists…and whatever other body part he finds useful to use. He is laid back and his demeanor is very "American" if you will. He is skinny and all muscle, muscle he uses to its extent in his street fighting style of combat. Unlike Kenshin, he holds no oaths of pacifism and is willing to pitch a fight for the fun of it, though he will always fight for what is right and just.

:Summary
Rurouni Kenshin takes place in 1879, 10 years after the start of the Meiji Revolution. This is the story of Kenshin Himura, a wandering samurai sworn to protecting the innocent and never killing again. There is a "Peace" under the Meiji government, but a very fragile peace that is protected by only a few. Radical groups such as the Oni Waban seek to destroy this peace and reform Japan once again. Though there are flaws in the government, Kenshin would not stand for violence that would unravel what he had fought, killed and then repented for. He and his comrades are the few people attempting to keep peace and order throughout the country.
