Children with learning difficulties require more
than their peers in the way of "drill and practice" to ensure overlearning,
and one painless way of achieving this extra input is by playing structured
board games. Children do not see these as "work" but will in fact practise many
skills in the course of these games.
"Content-free" games can be used for any subject/topic, only requiring cards
with phonic rules, sight words, specialist vocabulary, mathematical rules, concepts
and sums, etc., to be added to a single base board, which can serve for multiple
variations on the basic game.
A number of worksheets are also provided, mostly in the field of Literacy in
the first instance, and for a range of ages and abilities.
The games on the linked resource pages are all in GIF or JPEG format: to copy
any of them, simply right-click on the game(s) of your choice and then left-click
on "Save Picture As" or "Save As" on the drop-down menu which appears. Save
the file to your own hard drive and open in your favourite graphics program.
Any additions/alterations you wish to make to customise the game for your particular
circumstances can then be made. Print out at maximum size, preferably on card,
and laminate if possible.
NOTE: The fonts used are either Comic Sans MS, Arial Rounded MT Bold or (frequently)
a combination of both.
