The Thomas' 28th [29th] Louisiana Infantry Regiment in part played an additional part in the history of the American Civil War. Would you believe that a number of the men in this regiment ended up serving on the CSS Ram Arkansas at Vicksburg?

It is true.

While doing some research into collecting the muster roll records of the men of this regiment, this researcher came across a few notation on muster roll records pertaining to items such as: " Remarks: Transfd. to Gunboat Arkansas, July 21, 1862." -- " Gunboat Crew" -- " Absent on detached service on Confed. Steam Ram Arkansas." and so on.

These notations and the many others peaked my curosity.

I began looking at all of the men in the regiment to see just how many men actually took some active roll in the events surrounding the epic of this lone Confederate ram.

Doing some further research, I came across a total of 82 men [44 men from the 28th Louisiana] that had some notation similar to the ones above as well as uncovering some additional information regarding the events relating to the CSS Arkansas.

Basically, the CSS Arkansas was originally built in Memphis in 1861 -- 1862 and was not finished prior to the federal troops closing in on Memphis in May 1862.

This began the saga of the CSS Ram Arkansas and her trip into destiny at Vicksburg.

The original crew consisted of 50-60 Missouri Volunteers manning the guns and later the compliment totaled 232 men. The men from the Thomas's 28th Louisiana were more than likely a portion of this "232" compliment acquired at Vicksburg prior to the CSS Arkansas heading down the river towards Baton Rouge.

You can read a few accounts of her history at the following URL's:

The Story of the C.S.S. Arkansas

When doing a search for members of the Thomas' 28th Louisiana who had served, we also found some others from other Louisiana units and are including their names aswell.

It can be imagined that there are still other names and muster roll records to add to the following list of men.

The men of the Thomas' 28th Louisiana has been especially difficult to locate -- because the Muster Roll records are missing. What has passed for the Muster Roll records -- or at least, the ones that I checked into at the Military Library at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans consists of copies of Muster Roll cards -- one per man grouped into a book. There are copies of the Muster Roll cards on microfilm located a certain larger libraries in the state of Louisiana that can be further researched.

This will be done at a later date.

Here are the names to date that I have located.

Keep in mind, the men from Missouri are not listed. If you go to the web site above, you will find a detailed list of the men from Missouri who originally manned the CSS Arkansas.
