A Brief History of the
Co. G., 2nd Cons. Louisiana Infantry Regiment
which was composed in part of men from
28th Thomas' 28th [29th].

FORWARD

Following the surrender of the Confederate forces at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863, as a condition of surrender, the men were to march overland to two camps in Mississippi. One camp, the camp at Enterprise, Mississippi was the location where the Thomas' 28th Louisiana Infantry Regiment was to stay and await exchange at a later date.

However, after the ordeal at Vicksburg, many of the men who had served during the long and bloody siege, took the opportunity to go home. They crossed the Mississippi in droves by any means available and proceeded to go home.

It would be imagined that this mass exodus was for many reasons. Some probably had had their fill of war and wanted to turn their back on the killing and maiming, while others wanted to return to see their families and being a large portion of the men from the South were farmers, many wanted to return home for the harvest. Still others probably went home reluctantly -- being the thing to do at the time and seeing their friends, and relatives heading home, joined in the exodus.

Many planed, I would imagine, to return after an opportunity to see if their families were OK and their harvest was taken care of. Many did return at later dates, rejoining the various units encamped in the Louisiana area and a number of them ended up in Allen's Brigade which stayed pretty much intact until the end of hostilities.

In some cases, and especially after the occupying federal troops put an end to the mass departing of Confederate troops, some of the men who had served at Vicksburg ended up taking the long trek to Enterprise and the parole camps located there. To this date, a small cemetery exists at this location with fewer that 200 Confederate graves to mark the location of this camp.

This camp was to be set up and maintained by the Confederate government and the government was to feed and care for these troops awaiting an equal number of federal troops to be also exchanged at a future appointed time and place.

While in this camp in Enterprise, almost six months later in January of 1864, a group of these soldiers were formed into a reorganized regiment which mainly consisted of the old 22nd Regiment and remnants of other regiments encamped at Enterprise.

Company G. was formed with some men in camp that had served at Vicksburg with the 17th Louisiana Infantry Regiment as well as some men of the the Thomas' 28th [29th] Louisiana Infantry Regiment.

These men were then sent down to Mobile in the hopes of bolstering the defense of this city and bay which contained a number of forts, and defense positions.

Below is the organization of the 22nd Consolidated Regiment, of which the remnants of Thomas' 28th Louisiana became a part of. Below this section is a list of men that has been "gleaned" from Booth's Records and shown to have served with this reorganized unit.

If the records below are correct, approximately 780* men in total formed this new regiment. Through a search of the Booth's Records, I have been able to locate some 65 men who were assigned to Co. G. This figure probably is short and does not include all men who formed this Co. G.

Interesting to note: A sort of cat and mouse game was played with taking one soldier who was paroled and then sending him off to another regiment under a slightly different name in many cases. It appears that this continued for a long time, until the exchange of prisoners process ceased. If one looks at the Records by Booth, one can see many circumstances of this happening.

Hopefully additional names will eventually come to light.

This regiment was organized at Enterprise, Mississippi, on January 26, 1864, from the remnants of the 3rd, 17th, 22nd (later 21st), 23rd (later 22nd), 26th, 29th and 31st Louisiana regiments in the parole camp there. The new unit had 780 men on its rolls. On February 3, the regiment received orders to report to Mobile, Alabama. There the men garrisoned several redoubts and batteries around the city. During the next few months, the men drilled as heavy artillerists and performed guard duty. The regiment moved to Pollard on May 22 to guard the railroad to Montgomery from Federal raids out of Pensacola. On July 22, the men moved to Pine Barren's Creek to meet such a raid, but the enemy retreated to Pensacola before any fighting could occur. The passage of the forts guarding the mouth of Mobile Bay by Admiral David G. Farragut's Union fleet resulted in orders on August 4 for the regiment to return to Mobile. Again the men occupied various batteries in the city's defenses. Later in the fall, the regiment moved to the Eastern Shore defenses. Two companies garrisoned Battery Huger on the Appalachee River, and three companies held nearby Battery Tracy on the Blakely River. Four companies participated in the defense of Spanish Fort, March 27 - April 8, 1865. The men at Battery Huger and Battery Tracy fired their guns in support of the earthworks at Spanish Fort. When the latter were evacuated, the men of the regiment united at Huger and Tracy until they too were evacuated, on April 12. The regiment moved to Meridian, Mississippi, and was surrendered there on May 8.

Additional Soldiers from the Thomas' 28th who have a notation on their records to the effect of being "Paroled at Meridian, Miss." The parole date is also "May 12, 1865.
