THE DAY THE ARCHIVIST CAME TO SCHOOL

THE ARCHIVISTS NAME WAS JOANNE ROTHWELL. SHE SAID THAT THE PROFILES THEY KEPT HAVE TO BE AT A CERTAIN TEMPRATURE BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE BOOKS TOO DAMP THEY GO MOULDY LIKE BREAD, BUT IF THEY ARE TOO DRY THEY FALL APART AND GO CRUSTY. THERE IS A SPECIAL GEL CALLED SILICAN GEL AND IT IS PUT INTO A SPECIAL SILVER TIN WITH A PIECE OF PLASTIC IN THE MIDDLE. IF THAT GOES RED ITS DAMP. AND THERE IS ANOTHER DEVICE THAT SHOWS THE TEMPERATURE AND IT ALSO SHOWS THE RELATIVE HUMIDITY. SHE HAD A MAP THAT SHOWED THE HOUSES THAT THE COUNCIL BUILT. IT ONLY SHOWED THE COASTLINE OF WATERFORD BUT IT WAS HUGE AND SHE SAID THAT THERE WAS A MAP LIKE THAT OF EVERY COUNTY. WHEN YOU HAD PLANNING PERMISSION A 160 YEARS AGO, THE TOP OF THE MAP WASN’T CUT STRAIGHT BECAUSE IT WAS PRINTED TWICE, THE FELLOW WHO OWNED THE LAND BEFORE HAD THE SAME ONE AND IF SOMEONE COMPLAINED THAT HE DIDN’T BUY IT HE GOT THE FELLOW WHO DIDN’T OWN IT ANYMORE AND THEY JOINED THEM TOGETHER AND THEN THERE WAS NO MORE COMPLAINING. THERE WAS ONE BOOK THAT WAS 300 YEARS OLD AND YOU COULD STILL READ IT. IT WAS BRILLIANT, I THINK WE SHOULD WRITE ABOUT HER AND PUT IT IN THE NEWSPAPER.

THE END.

The Environmentalist's Visit
Waste Management is really important for everyone. We learned about reducing waste and then reusing and recycling before you eventually dump something in your bin for Landfill . We had all seen that ad. on tv and we know that we care about the environment for ourselves and for future generations. We have all been on holiday abroad ans in other counties in Ireland where Waste Management is not happening. What a disaster. County Waterford is leading the way and we are part of that. We want to recycle more - eg batteries because all our falilies use them and dump them. We learned from the environmentalist that we are doing a lot already - reusing plastic boxes in our classroom because even though seven types of plastic can be recycled it is expensive. We reuse the second side of photocopied sheets too and look out for the three arrows and the dot on items we buy so we know they can be recycled. We learned the two arrows around the dot means the company has a waste management progamme. We heard about saving energy and cutting electricity bills for our parents. We had done a survey on our waste and because we don't buy individually wrapped biscuits etc we are buying wisely and bringing our own bags to the supermarket. We need to look after our planet and the corner of the planet where we live is called Stradbally County Waterford - Leading the Way in Waste Management - No wonder we have beautiful trees and wildlife in our area. The school has robins, magpies , rabbits and foxes so we have are lucky to be able to enjoy nature at its best. We can't wait for Spring Time and the daffodils we planted. We are getting new gates too and the trees have been trimmed. The court has been washed and who knows what else we will do to enhanse our school environment. Thanks for visiting us and helping us to know the value of OUR OWN PLACE.

These are two minature gardens which we made from materials we found lying around at home - pasta , cocktail umbrellas, little lego figures, paper and gravel. Many other waste products may be reused in creating artwork eg plastic bottles , broken dolls and cars , christmas/ birthday cards and we even use end of stock rolls of wallpaper from a local hardwarestore to cover the noticeboard where we create our seasonal friezes. Used sweet boxes are ideal for paste or paint and many charts become 3d when empty cartons , matchboxes and wrappers are used. We are very proud of our 3D food pyramid and No Litter Posters.

Yes we have finally started our Action Plan for a Vegetable Patch. With the help of a learned and expert gardener friend we planted the first seeds on the 27 April. There are pumpkins, cabbages, onion sets, beans and peas . We have created ideal conditions for germination in homemade proprogators - a novel use for that dreaded plastic bag!! While we wait the land has been sprayed and volunteers will carry on the preparation within the next two weeks. We need people to dig trenches , errect wire to keep out the many rabbits living locally and a mini gate to name but a few jobs that will need to be covered. Also the plot itself needs to be dug and then the children will take over again so please check your diary and pencil us in! We already have a supply of manure at the ready - Thanks to Lar for same and a compostor will be delivered free of charge from the Waterford County Counci any day so just take a look at our seed planting and count the days!l

Thanks to Miriam , our local horticulturalist , who prepared the plans for our helpful Parents' Association and gave them the necessary directions for our Vegetable Garden. This all happened towards the end of May 2004 and the seedlings are ready for sowing within the next week. Maith Sibh!

Thanks to Waterford Crystal and Waterford Treasures for wonderful visits. Education at its best.

We also won Second Best School in Co. Waterford at the ESB Awards , presented in Limerick.

The icing on the cake for this year though was without a doubt two celebrities who gave of their precious time to visit Scoil na Croise Naofa - Eoin Kelly, Waterford Hurler , member of the Munster Champian Team - soon to be All Ireland winners( be positive ) and our Olympic Representative - Jamie Costin . Here are some photos of Jamie's visit. Go raibh míle maith agaibh agus beimid ag faire agus ag guí. Go n-éirí go geal libh. Táimid bródúil as an bheirt agaibh.
