We believe:
- There are many factors that determine an individuals weight, including activity levels, genetics, and food choices. Psychological factors contribute to compulsive/binge eating.
- Short-term restrictive diets do not provide solutions to the long-term problems that compulsive/binge eating represents.
- Low calorie dieting frequently results in rebound weight gain.
- Because of isolation and obsession with food, weight and body shape, yo-yo dieting sustains the cycle of guilt, despair, and low self-esteem.
- Unlike drugs and alcohol, one cannot abstain from food.
- Thinness alone does not bring happiness.
- Long-term recovery can be achieved.
We advocate a healthy lifestyle which includes: acceptance of the natural diversity of body shapes, lifelong exercise, balanced meals, a balance of recreation, spiritual and personal development, satisfying work, and healthy personal relationships.
To facilitate recovery, CRAED supports a broad range of prevention, education, intervention and treatment services. CRAED also enlists public support for research into causes of eating disorders and innovative treatment approaches.
