Anorexia Nervosa

Characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss, while still feeling "fat".

Category and Possible Warning Signs of Anorexia Nervosa

EATING AND RELATED BEHAVIORS:

  • Find excuse to skip lunch;
  • Unusual eating behavior, ritualistic eating habits;
  • Constantly talking about dieting;
  • Shows interest in food preparation but seldom eats what is prepared;
  • Fears "junk foods" (desserts and snack chips)considering these "bad" foods;
  • Eats mostly fruit and vegetables;
  • Hoards food (may store food in locker);
  • Stands whenever possible; and
  • Constant motion (fidgeting).


    BODY IMAGE AND BODY SATISFACTION:

  • Frequently wears oversized clothing;
  • Talks about need to lose weight despite thinness;
  • Noticeable weight loss;
  • Previously overweight;
  • Wears coat in classroom.


    HEALTH STATUS

  • Dizzy spells;
  • Fainting spells;
  • Extremely thin appearance;
  • Amenorrhea (if female);
  • Appears to be cold even when room temperature is comfortable.


    PERSONAL FUNCTIONING

  • Unusual concern about school functioning;
  • Never satisfied with grades;
  • Perfectionist;
  • Over reacts to criticism;
  • Depressed affect;
  • Unusual concern over change in routine;
  • Does not adapt well to new situations.


    ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES

  • Always striving for 100%, A+;
  • Participation in body-focused activities;
  • Few close friends.
