Defined as a self-perpetuating and self-defeating cycle of binge eating followed by purging.

CATEGORY OF WARNING SIGNS OF BULIMIA NERVOSA

EATING AND RELATED BEHAVIORS


  • Frequent skipping meals;
  • Conversation largely about food and weight;
  • Eats large quantities quickly;
  • Quantities of food eaten may vary from small amounts to large amounts.


    BODY IMAGE AND BODY SATISFACTION

  • Expresses feelings of guilt after eating;
  • Conversation frequently revolves around dieting and weight loss;
  • Noticeable fluctuations in weight;
  • Previously or currently overweight.


    HEALTH STATUS
  • Swollen glands: "chipmunk" face;
  • Scars or open sores on knuckles;
  • Mouth sores;
  • Bad breath;
  • Cracked lips;
  • Irregular menses (if female); and
  • Dizzy spells.


    PERSONAL FUNCTIONING

  • Perfectionist;
  • Conversation about self, largely negative;
  • Mood Swings;
  • Does not adapt well to change;
  • Withdrawal from friends and activities: an unusual commitment to an activity (i.e. exercise) to the exclusion of other activities.


    ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES

  • Always striving for 100%, A+;
  • Participation in body-focused activities; and
  • Substance abuse: drugs/alcohol.
