WOLMER’S BOYS, MEADOWBROOK AND CAMPION LEAD IN SCHOOLS CHESS

Wolmer’s Boys, Meadowbrook and Campion took the lead in their respective Zones as the preliminary rounds of the UNION BANK/GLEANER National High Schools Chess Championship continued on Thursday.

KINGSTON ZONE (ZONE 1) RESULTS

In Zone 1 action at KC on Thursday, Wolmer’s Boys turned back St. Georges College 3-1. Winning for Wolmers were, Marlon Moore on Board 2, Mario Watson on Board 3 and Timothy Mitchell on Board 4.

On Board 1, the highly rated Wolmers Captain Malaku Lorne was surprised by Charles Russell of St. Georges, in what is easily the best match of the tournament so far. From the start, Russell had Lorne under pressure until the latter succumbed after almost three hours of battle, giving St. Georges their consolation point.

STATHS came from behind to defeat Camperdown 3-1, through victories on Boards 1 through 3, from Oneil Lewis, Casroy Muir and Duane Bernard respectively. Oliver Grace secured Camperdown’s sole point on Board 4 against STATHS Captain Alanzo Watson.

In the other match for the day, Charlie Smith were lucky to eke out a 2.5-1.5 victory against Wolmer’s Girls. Play continues next Thursday in Zone 1 with Camperdown up against Charlie Smith, KC vs St. Georges and the top of the table clash between Zone leaders Wolmer’s Boys and second place STATHS.
