KINGSTON ZONE AND ST. ANDREW ZONE RESULTS AFTER ROUND 1

The 2001 National High Schools Chess Championship got underway at Kingston College on Thursday with two matches. In the encounter between KC and STATHS, KC came out 3-1 winners with wins on Boards 2 to 4 from Mark Jones, Richard Burton and Adrian Cushnie over Casroy Muir, Dwayne Bernard and Alanzo Watson respectively.

The match-up on Board 1 saw Oneil Lewis of STATHS defeating KC’s Fitzroy Henry, who he defeated in similar fashion last year when the two clashed on Board 2.

In the other match on the day, Wolmer’s Girls gave fair warning that they were not there to make-up numbers when they played to a 2-2 tie with St. Georges College. St. Georges had raced to a 2-0 lead after Charles Russell and Eucle Smalling dispatched Patricia Johns and Lydia Morrison early. Seeing their teammates go down, Nichola Arthurs and Lydia Nelson returned the favour by defeating Gordon Dixon and Raelando Knowles.

The match between last years Zone Champion Wolmer’s Boys and Charlie Smith was postponed.

Action in Zone 1 continues next Thursday, when STATHS takes on Camperdown, Charlie Smith will battle Wolmer’s Girls and St. George’s will be up against Wolmer’s Boys. Teams named first will play white on Board 1. Teams in Zone 1 include Camperdown, Kingston College, Wolmer’s Boys Wolmer’s Girls, St. Georges College, Charlie Smith and STATHS.
