UNION BANK - GLEANER NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS
"Let the games begin." The 2001-2002 National High School Chess Championship gets underway next week Thursday November 1 with games in the Kingston zone and in the St. Andrew zone on Friday November 2. The games in the Kingston zone will all be played at Kingston College on Thursdays at 3:00 p.m., and the St. Andrew zone games will be played at Campion College on Fridays at 3:00 p.m. A record number of High School teams are down to compete this year with 8 from Rural Jamaica and 14 from Kingston and St. Andrew. The Schools' Championship will be played in 4 zones and is being sponsored this year by first time sponsors Union Bank of Jamaica and the Gleaner Company. Leading the St. Andrew Zone is defending champions Meadowbrook High and 2001 runners-up Campion College, whilst the strongest challenges in the Kingston zone will come from K.C. and Wolmer’s Boys. The Cornwall and Middlesex zones will get underway in the second or third week in November with Mannings and St. Jago starting as favorites in those zones, respectively.
