BURNIE:
Burnie occupies a key position on the tourist map, as a gateway to the rich mining area of the west coast and the scenic and historic far north-west coast. It is the fourth largest city in Tasmania and a major industrial centre. Once called Emu Bay, it was the port from which tin ore mined at Waratah, 57km to the south, was exported. This deepwater port is now one of Australia’s significant container ports, serviced by a rail centre which is the headquarters of the privately owned Emu Bay Railway Company.

Today the town owes its growth to the development of its forest-based industries, the largest of which is the paper maker, Australian Paper (Amcor).

attractions include:
Visit the Pioneer Village Museum, a replica of an 1890s street complete with blacksmith’s shop, printer, bakery and boot-maker. The museum also features collections of wedding gowns, photography and maps. Part of the Civic Centre Precinct, open Mon-Fri, 9am - 5pm, Sat/Sun 1.30 - 4.30pm. The Regional Art Gallery is open the same hours as the museum with free admission.
Explore the fine gardens and natural attractions in the surrounding district: Rhododendron Gardens (9km), Annsleigh Gardens (10km), Fern Glade (3km) and Guide Falls (17km).
Spend time at Burnie Park, a pleasant spread of parkland along Shorewell Creek. It includes some caged animals and the historic Burnie Inn, the town’s oldest building built in 1847.
