Tasmania’s reconstructed Abt Railway between Queenstown and Strahan on the West Coast is one of the world’s great railway journeys. Now called the West Coast Wilderness Railway, it runs through the spectacular rainforested gorge of the King River. The Abt locomotives, named after their inventor, use a unique rack-rail system to climb the steep grades.

In the North West, the Don River Railway delights rail enthusiasts, running regular excursions and displaying a superbly-tended collection of steam and diesel locos. In southern Tasmania, the Bush Mill miniature steam railway crosses tall trestle bridges and winds through eucalypt forest near Port Arthur.

Bass Strait is the sea-road to Tasmania. The route is operated by two superfast ships,  Spirit of Tasmania I and II.  These vessels offer an overnight service in both directions between Melbourne and Devonport seven days a week, year round, with additional services in peak periods.

For those travelling by air, QantasLink, Regional Express and Virgin Blue operate frequent services to Tasmania, with direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Launceston and Hobart, and from Melbourne to Devonport, Burnie and King Island.  For more specific information refer to the flights page.

King Island Airlines and TasAir operate services to King Island.   Island Airlines Tasmania and Schutt Aviation operate services to Flinders Island.
