The
Tasmanian Tigers
Tasmania’s
state cricket team, the Tasmanian
Tigers, is one of our sporting icons and a source
of pride for all Tasmanians. As
finalists in the 2001-2002 Pura Cup, it can justifiably claim
to be one of the best cricket teams in the country. Captain
Ricky Ponting is also captain of the Australian One Day side.
Bellerive
Oval, on the eastern shores of the Derwent River overlooking
Hobart’s CBD, is the team’s home ground. With modern facilities,
two principal and five smaller stands and a spacious hill,
it has capacity for 15,000 fans.
The
Tasmanian Tigers also play at the North Tasmania Cricket Association
Ground in Launceston and Devonport Oval, both in the north
of the State.

Thank you for supporting
the Moorilla International
Tennis
Tasmania would like to publicly thank Moorilla for their
tremendous support during the International in Hobart over
the past week. A special mention also goes out to the volunteers
of the event. Without their tremendous help, the event could
not have been as successful as it was. We would also like
to thank all the people who came to watch the event over
the seven days. It was great to see an Aussie win and we
look forward to bringing you a bigger event in 2004.

Targa
Tasmania
Targa
Tasmania has grown to become one of the world’s true classic
motor sport events. This annual event held in April each
year has quickly established an international reputation and
draws competitors from around the world. Entrants comprise
a wide range of media-attracting personalities including former
world champions and other well-known motor sport competitors
from both Australia and overseas, as well as national and international
celebrities.
Targa
Tasmania is a six-day tarmac rally with competitive stages
on closed roads. The competition concept is drawn directly
from the best features of the Mille Miglia, the Coupe des
Alpes and the Tour de Corse. It is an invitation only event
with up to 300 cars usually participating. The four divisions
within the event are historic, touring classic, classic and
modern.

Yacht
Races
Sydney
to Hobart Yacht Race
Regarded as one of
the world’s greatest ocean racing classics, the Sydney
to Hobart Yacht Race begins in Sydney Harbour on Boxing
Day and finishes in the Derwent River off Battery Point in
Hobart. It is a 630 nautical mile race southwards in the Tasman
Sea to Tasman Island, across Storm Bay to the finish. The leaders
in the race arrive in Hobart in time for New Year’s Eve festivities.
Melbourne
to Hobart Yacht Race
The Melbourne to Hobart
Yacht Race, crowned as one of the toughest yacht races in the
world, begins in Portsea, Victoria. The yachts and crews confront
the wild waters of Bass Strait before battling the Roaring
Forties down Tasmania’s west coast.
King
of the Derwent
The Derwent River
continues as a world-class aquatic playground each January
with the Wrest Point King of the Derwent yacht race just
after New Year.
Sailing
South
The new Sailing
South regatta aims to encourage participants in
the Sydney to Hobart and Melbourne to Hobart yacht races
to extend their stay in Tasmania by offering a week of first-class
competition. As part of this, and extending into the rest
of January, Hobart also hosts the World Dragon
and Mirror Championships.
Navigator
Dash
Also in early January,
some of the country’s fastest yachts compete in the new Navigator
Dash across Bass Strait between Devonport and Melbourne. With a
$10,000 prize to the entrant able to establish a new record
for the sailing, this innovative event allows skippers to choose
their times of departure, within a specified time frame, to
take advantage of the best weather conditions for their craft.
