TAHUNE AIRWALK:

Walk the High Wire for Heart-stopping Views

Tasmania is one of the few destinations world-wide to offer a spectacular treetops walkway. The attraction is one of only a few fixed structure canopy walkways internationally and provides a birds-eye view of the southern forests, the local mountain range and the Tasmanian World Heritage Area.

Not even the birds get a better view of the forest when you take the Tahune Forest Air Walk.  The Air Walk is 570 metres long and is between 25 and 45 metres high among the treetops.

Visitors "walk the high wire", suspended up to 45 metres in the air on steel towers barely visible from the ground. The $A3.1m first stage is more than half a kilometre long.

It meanders through the treetops in rainforest at the confluence of two mighty rivers – the Huon and the Picton – and one section extends over the meeting of the rivers to create a sense of being suspended above it.

The AirWalk also overlooks the Hartz Mountains and surrounding old growth forests and takes visitors through the changing forest and its life cycle. An associated visitor centre demonstrates the use of Tasmanian timber from its historic purposes to modern practices. The design of the centre draws on the natural environment and features the use of stone, timber and water.

A nearby Huon Pine walk is popular with visitors, providing easy access to trees thousands of years old and renowned for sweet-smelling timber that has traditionally be used in boat-building and these days features in high quality timber crafts.

The AirWalk is 1½ hours drive south of Hobart. It is part of the popular Huon Trail, which also includes the Hastings thermal pool and cave system and the hidden bays and sheltered coves of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. The area is popular with rafters, walkers and anglers.

The Reserve is open from 9am - 4.30pm (April to November) and 9am - 8.15pm (December to March).  Click here to visit the forestry website on the Tahune Forest Air Walk.
